Von Nemethy paddles north from Juniper Island as the sun sets over the Adirondacks.
August in October: 80 degrees F. on Lake Champlain in the first few days of October. Summer, but with low-angle Autumn light. Very strange, but very beautiful. Hazy on the Green Mountains and the Adirondacks and blue water with an unnerving touch of algae closer to shore. And very shallow because of the drought. Leddy Beach to Juniper Island and back with a south wind. Shot with an iPhone.

The World Comes to Lake Placid
Beautiful winter day in the Adirondacks Sunday for the continuing World University Winter Games in Lake Placid (Jan 12-22). Competitors from around the world in just about every winter sport, from curling to skating, hockey, and alpine and cross country skiing. It’s like a mini-Olympics without the lines and the pricey tickets. (Click on photo or headline for more and gallery link.) Pick an event, get tickets online and go. I was at the cross country sprints at Mt. Van Hoevenberg. The sun was out and, unlike most of January so far, it felt and looked like winter. Click here for a gallery.

Something to Luge
You have probably been asking yourself: “How DO lugers train during the summer when there’s no snow?” The answer was on display on a hot day in mid-July at Mt. Van Hovenberg athletic complex in Lake Placid. Teens in the development program were rolling on street luges, coached by former Olympic luger Jayson Terdiman. Click photo or headline for more.
