Just When You Thought It was Over

Montpelier firefighter Leon Eggleston tilts his helmet to deflect the water reaching him from a ladder truck hose as he steps back from the rk Miles fire. Below a firefighter on the deck of Hunger Mountain Co-op is illuminated (along with the co-op windows).
Montpelier’s unbelievably bad luck continued Wednesday, November 1, when a major fire leveled the rk Miles lumber yard off Barre Street and Stone Cutters Way. Miraculously, firefighters saved the nearby buildings: the rk Miles showroom, the old Clothespin Factory building and Hunger Mountain Co-op. It was a spectacular and hot blaze that lit the night sky pink for miles and melted the vinyl siding off nearby buildings. Click here for a gallery. Click here for Montpelier Bridge updates.
